Vision Project Romania

The poor cannot afford
an eye examination and glasses. Currently, eye care is given by volunteer optometrists from the UK
and America who provide basic eye examinations and glasses during short visits to Romania.
It is mainly the families being supported by Smiles, the children in the school and very poor villagers in Gepiu, who are being helped.

The Foundation wants to develop its eye-care services, in the Medical Centre which is part of the second phase of the Tileagd Community Complex, as it believes that eliminating unnecessary visual impairment helps eliminate poverty.

The Vision Project will have two rooms, one to be used as an Optometry Clinic and one as a Workshop. It is intended to train and employ local people as optical technicians in the workshop, and eventually, one or two Romanian nationals as optometrists.

It is hoped that the Optometry rooms will be equipped and in use by the end of 2007.

The Smiles Vision Project will then be in a position to provide low-cost glasses to the local community and make the difference between a life of poverty and a life of opportunity.
