Tileagd Children’s Centre
February
08 Special Report

After the first six months of the Community School
operation, Smiles knew we needed a pre-school, nursery facility. Many of
the children attending school had never experienced sitting in class,
listening to a teacher, and added to this, the fact they could not speak
the Romanian language we knew we had a major challenge on our hands.
As a result, Smiles brought forward by 12 months, our
desire to open a Nursery for pre-schoolers. The Tileagd Children’s Centre
was our response.
A former communist office and subsequent Orthodox
Church office and home for the priest, Smiles purchased the property in
March 2004 and undertook a major renovation project to convert the
building to a suitable facility for a day care nursery.

Opened in September 2004, the Centre’s director,
Delia Bideran now leads a team of 7 staff caring for 32 children each day.
As part of the renovation, an entire bathroom block was built, so the
daily schedule includes, bath time, breakfast, lunch and lots of fun.

Snack time

Preparing for meals

Having fun!
The Tileagd Children’s Centre has also achieved our
objective of integrating Romanian and Gypsy children who now happily learn
and play together every day.

As is well acknowledged in the west, pre-school
develops the child and increases their readiness for grade school better
than anything. Now we have that opportunity in Tileagd, Romania, and the
benefit being felt by the 6 year olds starting school this September is
enormous. They are very grateful to those who enables them to attend
Nursery at the Smiles Children’s Centre in Tileagd.

More young children are waiting to attend. Please
help us today say ‘Yes’.
