Website Report
from Region 3
Sue Allen
It’s
always a pleasant task to report on Smiles fundraising in Region 3 at
this time of year as it follows the
Smiles Christmas Market
at St John’s Walton, Chesterfield. This
year is no exception.
Unlike 2010, the
weather was kind and it appeared to me that this was the largest and I
could say the most spectacular Market yet, featuring not only the
long-established stalls but many new ideas. For the first time we
could drop in on Santa’s Grotto
(in case you didn’t know, Santa does
actually live in north Derbyshire). This young visitor looks very
happy with her visit.
The amount raised and reported immediately after the event was
over £2000
but this always increases in the following weeks as monies continue to
be received.
Success stories like
this are only possible because so many people work so hard over a long
period of time to plan and prepare the event. Thank you, everyone.
Also on sale at the
Market were Smiles calendars designed by some of the young ladies from
the area who went on the October Mission Trip. In two days these
raised a further £500 and this total will also continue to rise.
Twenty four Mission Trippers,
led by Stephen and Carol Woodward, visited Romania from Region 3 in
October. Many were repeat Trippers and not only discovered the many
ongoing challenges and exciting new initiatives but found joy in
seeing the result of their previous hard work and fundraising back in
the UK. Seeing containers converted to homes never fails to amaze. The
new Trippers found it to be, as we know, a life-changing experience.
We have many Smiles
supporters working in their different ways to raise money for
projects. Coffee mornings organised by
Julie Waddoups in the Chesterfield area
has raised over £1000. Chris & Pat Calow
completed the Pembrokeshire Coastal Walk in August – 186 miles in 12
days – raising £1200 for the Vision project. Still in Chesterfield,
St John’s Church
sent a cheque for £4400 in support of the school. We have several
individuals raising money through sponsorship for half marathons and
other runs.A little less
energetically, quizes organised by Smiles Ambassadors,
John & Joan Mayo,
continue to be very popular in the West Midlands. Their church,
Catshill Baptist,
donated £1000 for the Smiles Centre for Children with Disabilities.
Part of the current Capital Campaign for the
Joint Facility of Love.

Victoria Waddoups celebrates her 18th Birthday.
Another Ambassador, Peggy Feltham, talks about Smiles on every
occasion possible and regularly sends cheques from various speaking
and singing engagements. Peggy isn’t afraid to chat to strangers
either. On a recent train journey which involved an unexpected change
of London station, train and seat back to the West Midlands, she found
herself talking to a complete stranger about Smiles who, by the end of
the journey, had given Peggy all the cash he had in his pockets for
our work in Romania - approximately £250!
Perhaps we should all talk to more strangers on trains!!
If you are in the Region and are able to help us to spread the word
about The Smiles Foundation, or would like someone to come and give a
presentation at your church, school or other organisation, please do
let me know.
Thank you for all you do in support of the Work of the Smiles
Foundation in Romania.
