Maria’s Report – October 2011

Investing in PEOPLE- part 2

Even if the summer mission trip season is finished, the work within the Smiles Foundation is certainly not! Many people told me during the summer time “do not worry … September will be a quiet month!!!”…..Well, it was not like that for me and my desk!!

September began with a mission trip!! Yes, a different type mission trip experience!! A Church Challenge! It was great! A team from Pembroke, Wales who came for the first time to Romania with Smiles. They knew about us, because we have visited them a few times before with the Tileagd choir but this time it was their turn to come and see it for real. To see all the stories we had been telling them all these years! The team were great. They helped us a lot in everything we had to do, in our day-to-day work and they were soooooo understanding, very patient with us when we faced some hard times!! And when I say hard, I mean it. Let me tell you why! The day they arrived our boiler broke down at the Mission Centre!! It was a shock and a sad time for me!! We had over 200 people this summer and it did not happen to have the mission centre without hot water for 2 days! The good news is that we had cold water and the swimming pool was close by!! But still, I would like to say THANK YOU to all the team for their time and energy and thank you to Mai Parry for organising this trip. Hope you will come back sometime soon!!

Once the team left, we started the meeting marathon! Mr Hoy was getting ready to go back to UK for nearly a month so lots to plan before that.

One of the major issues was for the
Joint Facility of Love in Salonta. The site became alive!! We managed to agree with the contractor terms and condition for the work that needs to be done there, and soon after that a team of 17 people arrived on site and started the job!! Please pray for the funds that are needed in order for this project to be seen through to the end!! I’m sure God will provide, but He uses us don’t forget!

Also a BIG thing that happened in September was the starting point of the High School education for two of our kids from Tileagd, Cornel & Sebastian.
I was at the opening ceremony and I could not stop my tears! I remembered the day when Cornel started the school in Smiles. September 15th 2003!! He was so small you could hardly imagine that he will get to the high school level!! September 12th, when I had to go with them to the school it was one of those dreams that you see becoming reality!!!

The school is great. Their main teacher a really nice person. The class is nice too. Now we need your prayers for these two kids! It is something new for them and I’m more than happy to see that they like it!! They have moved from home in Tileagd to here in Cihei and they stay in the Smiles front house. I’m their supervisor!! I do not know if that is a good news or a bad news but is a news! I went to the first “parent meeting” and everybody was surprised to see how young their mum was! Good job Ritza (our newest social assistant) was with me, and they asked us if we were their sisters!!

I would like to ask you to pray for us – for the boys and for us from Cihei to be a good encouragement for them! I would also encourage you and appreciate if you can find ways of sponsoring these 2 kids with their education. The expenses for them each month is £167 / $267 each person! Please help.

Once the building in Salonta was sorted out and the two boys settled, I managed to take a few days off and go to my home village to see my family. It was great to spend some time with them.
My grandmother was the happiest as she celebrated her 81st birthday! Then I managed to go to Serbia with my parents for one day – as it is very close to us – to visit some places and get some goodies (they are cheaper there, comparing with Romania). I had a great great time and was happy to see places that I only saw from the Romanian side!!

Well, the conclusion of the month????!!! Is that investing in people is still the best thing. The best asset you can invest in. Something that you are sure will never lose its true value!
I am thankful for people that are investing in me and I pray to God to be a good example and to always invest in people.

When I was at home, we celebrate at the church the
“Harvest Day”. Lots of things to say THANK YOU to God!! But one of the things that is in my mind right now and I would like to share with you, is that I would like to say THANK YOU for the church that I grew up in! A great place. Here I learned to play an instrument, the mandolin. I would like to share with you one of the songs.

And like I said last month: When you feel that your work, your time, your energy, your money in the people is feeling a little wasted, do not worry. God will take care of it at the right time! At the right time you will see the results.

From an impossible situation God can make it possible! So just have faith!

Thank you God!!
Thanks to all of you!
Have a blessed month,

With love,

Maria
